Crosscode is a 16 bit style 2d puzzle rpg with platforming where you spray balls all over the place in a weird future MMO where you pilot an artificial body through an actual landscape.
The game launches September 20th, and release trailer does a great job of conveying most everything in the OP and more, so if you don't feel like reading, https://youtu.be/zuN-5yxwogU
If you're in the mood to give it a try there's a demo on the steam page https://store.steampowered.com/app/368340/CrossCode/ or you can play it in your browser http://www.cross-code.com/en/start and yes it does have controller support in both versions. It'll gives you a taste for the basic mechanics, but the game really opens up after that demo ends. I played the early access version two years ago and it was really amazing after 12 hours of gameplay I'd only gotten past the first temple but I had found a bunch of hidden content and side quests.
Gameplay: A whole lot of puzzles, platforming and since its an mmo setting, there's a ton of optional quests, murdering random creatures, hidden bosses and you'll be working with other NPCs on occasion.
Main Character: Lea, she's a spheromancer who has memory problems and her version of the game is bugged so her vocabulary is limited so she's a pretty typical JRPG protagonist in that regard, but she's expressive and her personality does manage to get through. I hope in the end she doesn't kill god.
Character advancement: As you level, you can put points into various skill trees which'll increase your stats, unlock specials and alter the mechanics of your abilities. The skill trees are mirrored and you can invest in one and switch over your investment to the adjacent skill tree at no cost. Later on you'll unlock additional elemental upgrade paths.

Combat: You've got melee and ranged attacks, specials for both, with guarding and dashing as your defensive options.

You'll learn elemental stances which consist of heat, cold, wave and shock. You use them to solve puzzles and to change up your combat abilities.

The bosses are fun and have puzzle elements.

You can also increase your stats with equipment and there's consumables for buffs/healing.
In conclusion: Crosscode is a game of contrasts and basically 2D Nier: Automata without butt.
